Onderzoek

Gastonderzoekers

How to apply

Please send the following documents to visitingscholars-ivir@uva.nl:

  • CV including a list of publications
  • A motivation letter, including your background and research proposal, suggested timeframe, reasons for choosing IViR, as well as whether you require a formal invitation to travel (e.g., for visa purposes)
  • One brief letter of recommendation/reference

The decision will be based on the relevance and quality of the application and is dependent on the availability of working space for the desired period. Applications are reviewed three times per year. In order to be considered for the next review round, please submit your application by the 1st of:

  • November
  • March
  • June

Please note that:

  • Applications are not assessed on a rolling basis. Applicants can expect to receive a response within two weeks after the deadline indicated above for each application period.
  • We cannot consider applications from candidates below the PhD candidate level; Bachelor’s and Master’s students are not eligible for this programme.
  • The typical duration of a research stay at IViR is two to three months. Research stays shorter than two weeks should be exceptionally arranged. Research stays longer than three months may be considered on an exceptional basis, provided that sufficient scientific justification is included in the applicant’s motivation letter

IViR visiting scholars enjoy:

  • Access to the University library, containing over four million publications, 12,000 journals and vast online resources
  • UvA internet and mail account
  • Invitations to participate in all IViR lecture series and other IViR events
  • Working space – Note: Own laptop required.
  • The opportunity to present their research at IViR seminar series

IViR visiting scholars are expected to:

  • Actively engage in IViR activities
  • Give a presentation on their research project
  • Mention IViR in any publications resulting from or having worked on during their stay
  • Follow the faculty regulations, including in any case the regulations on research data management and research integrity

Commitment to diversity

The Institute’s work and community is strengthened by the diversity of our network and our differences in background. We actively seek and welcome visiting scholar applications from people of diverse background and unrepresented groups.

Funding

As a general rule, IViR cannot offer funding for visiting scholars.

However, to establish a modest but meaningful support mechanism, the IViR Foundation offers financial support to one financially constrained scholar per year from countries listed by the OECD as Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle Income, or Upper Middle Income. Eligible scholars may apply for funding of up to EUR 3,000 to support a research visit to the Institute.

Other interested researchers are encouraged to apply for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship and spend it at IViR.

Accommodation in Amsterdam

Prospective visiting scholars should note that the Faculty of Law at the University of Amsterdam cannot provide reserved accommodation nor, due to limited resources, is it in a position to act as agent, or intermediary, in the context of an individual applicant’s search for accommodation.
