In order to enable financially constrained scholars from OECD-designated Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle and Upper Middle Income Countries to visit IViR, the Institute grants one scholarship per year, funded by the IViR Foundation, to a selected scholar from one of these countries. This initiative aims to enhance the Institute’s global inclusivity, foster scholarly exchange, and align with broader goals of equitable access to academic opportunities.
1. Eligibility Criteria
- Academic fit: Applicant must meet the standards and research focus areas of IViR (e.g., digital rights, technology and data governance, intellectual property).
- Early-career scholars preferred: PhD candidates or postdocs (max. 5 years post-PhD).
- Financial need: Must convincingly explain their inability to fund a visit without external support.
- Geographic scope: Must hold citizenship and be based in the academic institution in an OECD-designated Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle or Upper Middle Income Country.
2. Application Requirements
Applicants requesting financial support must submit:
- CV including a list of publications
- Motivation letter (max. 2 pages), outlining:
- Research background and proposal
- Proposed visit timeframe
- Reasons for choosing IViR
- Whether a formal invitation is required (e.g., for visa purposes)
- One letter of recommendation (max 1 page)
- Short explanation of why the applicant cannot fund the visit otherwise and requires IViR Foundation support, accompanied by a draft budget (flight, accommodation, etc.).
3. Financial Support Structure
- Annual Lump Sum of up to €3,000 per Scholar
- Provided to support travel, accommodation in Amsterdam, and subsistence.
- Scholars are encouraged to secure complementary funding where possible.
4. Application Procedure
- Applications must be submitted by 1 October to the following email: visitingscholars-ivir@uva.nl.
- Important: Please indicate the country of the academic institution at which you are based directly in the email subject line, using the following template: “IVIR Scholarship Application – [APPLICANT’S COUNTRY]”.
- The selected candidate will be notified by 15 December, allowing planning for a research stay in the following calendar year.
- Please note that reasons will not be provided for unsuccessful applications.
5. Post-Visit Reporting
- The scholarship holder will be asked to submit a short reflection or summary (1-2 pages) after the visit, highlighting outcomes and benefits of the stay.
