Marie-Therese Sekwenz is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Information Law (IViR) at the University of Amsterdam.
She works with João Pedro Quintais on the NWO Vidi project Generative AI Content Moderation: Regulation for Fundamental Rights, which examines how EU law can address the moderation of generative AI content while protecting fundamental rights, particularly freedom of expression.
Within this project, her work connects the Digital Services Act and the AI Act with empirical research into how these frameworks operate in practice.

Her broader research focuses on platform accountability, content moderation, and the implementation of EU digital regulation. Combining legal analysis with empirical and participatory methods, she examines how regulatory requirements translate into platform practices and people’s ability to exercise their rights.
Marie-Therese obtained her PhD cum laude from TU Delft, where she also serves as Deputy Director of the AI Futures Lab on Rights and Justice. Alongside her academic work, she is a journalist for the Austrian public broadcaster ORF Ö1.
Welcome to the institute Marie-Therese!
