Second Distinguished IViR Lecture<\/strong>

In the last 30 years, the amount of \u201cInformation law\u201d \u2013 rules adopted in relation to information and communications technologies \u2013 has grown exponentially in Europe. From telecommunications, audiovisual media and platform regulation, over privacy and data (protection) law, to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence rules, it is sometimes hard to see the forest for the trees. Some (information lawyers) wonder: \u201cIs there too much of a good thing\u2026?\u201d Others point to the limited impact these laws had on the competitiveness of markets and the protection of consumers\u2019 and citizens’ rights.

Based on personal experiences in academia, policy-making and regulation, this talk explored common pitfalls and d\u00e9j\u00e0-vu\u2019s as well as new tensions that arise in the field of information law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peggy Valcke<\/strong> is (part-time) full professor of law & technology at KU Leuven<\/mark><\/a>. She is co-director of CiTiP<\/mark><\/a>, principal investigator at imec<\/mark><\/a> <\/mark>(previously iMinds<\/mark><\/a>), and member of Leuven.AI<\/mark><\/a>. In 2020-2024, she served as vice dean research at the Leuven Faculty of Law & Criminology in the team of Dean Wouter Devroe. She has taken up positions as visiting and part-time professor at Tilburg University<\/mark><\/a> (Netherlands; 2009-2018); Bocconi University Milan<\/mark><\/a> (Italy; 2018-2019), the European University Institute<\/mark><\/a> in Florence (Italy; 2014), and Central European University<\/mark><\/a> in Budapest (Hungary; 2006-2007). 
In January 2024, she joined the executive board of the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT – IBPT<\/mark><\/a>).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
