As part of the fourth\u00a0IViR Science Fiction and Information Law competition<\/a>,\u00a0DigiCon<\/a>\u00a0will publish the stories of the finalists every week. The winning stories will be revealed during the\u00a0CPDP 2026 conference<\/a>\u00a0in Brussels on 19-22 May.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth shortlisted story is now live on\u00a0DigiCon<\/a>.
It is called \u201cArise<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>\u201d and was written by\u00a0Bernt Hugenholtz<\/mark><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It follows a man who has been paying a monthly subscription fee to spend time with his deceased mother for twelve years.<\/em>
The technology is seamless. The company is ruthless. And somewhere in a cardboard box in the attic, the answer to how it all began is waiting to be found.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The featured image accompanying the story is from\u00a0Better Images of AI<\/strong><\/a>, a non-profit library challenging the tired visual tropes of AI, robots, glowing brains, metal hands, and replacing them with images that reflect its actual material reality.\u00a0DigiCon<\/strong>\u00a0has been collaborating with them, and you can explore the full\u00a0flipbook<\/a>\u00a0on their website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
