Organisation and research climate

The Institute is managed by a three-person Board of Directors. The Board of Directors receives regular advice from its Scientific Advisory Board, and is supported by a three-person senior staff team. The Secretariat provides general support to IViR. As one of the Law Faculty’s main research institutes, the Institute plays a large part in the Faculty's PhD program. On average, six to eight PhD students are employed at IViR at any given time. In addition, the Institute regularly employs (junior) project researchers to carry out commissioned research under the supervision of senior staff. Furthermore, students admitted to the research master program in information law regularly participate in distinct research projects.

The research culture at IViR can be characterized as open-minded, critical, informal and collaborative. Collaborations between researchers, both within the Institute and elsewhere, is encouraged, as are interdisciplinary collaborations. Interdisciplinary exchanges are also promoted by regularly inviting experts from related, non-legal fields to speak at workshops, seminars and ’spreektafels’.

Contributing to the Institute’s stimulating research climate is its Documentation Centre. The Documentation Centre is the heart of the Institute and hosts a specialized collection of books, law journals, grey literate and electronic resources in the field of information law.

IViR actively promotes ’open content’ models of knowledge distribution. Nearly all publications by IViR staff are available online on the Institute's website http://www.ivir.nl.
