| The cross-border
exploitation of literary and artistic works has
increased dramatically in recent years. This development
is evident in respect of ‘borderless’ media such as
broadcasting and information services provided online.
However, more traditional sectors of the information and
entertainment industries are also undergoing a process
of rapid internationalisation, particularly within the
European Union.
Current problems will
form the basis for this optional course, in which recent
developments of copyright will be explored from an
international perspective. Special attention will be
given to differences in national copyright laws,
international treaties (Berne Convention, TRIPs
Agreement, WIPO-Treaties), harmonization of copyright in
the European Union (amongst others the EC ‘Copyright
Directive’), private international law aspects and the
emerging alternatives to the conventional copyright
regime and licensing practices, such as Open Source and
Creative Commons.
