The COMMUNIA Thematic Network aims at becoming a European point of reference for theoretical analysis and strategic policy discussion of existing and emerging issues concerning the public domain in the digital environment - as well as related topics, including, but not limited to, alternative forms of licensing for creative material; open access to scientific publications and research results, management of works whose authors are unknown (i.e. orphan works). COMMUNIA is funded by the European Commission within the European Commission within the eContentplus framework. It started its activities on 1 September 2007. The University of Amsterdam is one of the founding members of COMMUNIA.
A COMMUNIA workshop will be organized on 20 and 21 October 2008 in Amsterdam. The workshop covers the legal, economical and technical issues related to certifying public domain works and relinquishing intellectual property rights in Europe.
One of COMMUNIA's points of interest is alternative licensing of creative material, for instance through Creative Commons licenses. Visit COMMUNIA's website for more information on COMMUNIA.
